La oveja latxa es la raza mayoritaria en el País Vasco y la más primitiva actualmente en producción. El nombre de “latxa (áspera o basta en euskera) se refiere a su lana poco fina y, por tanto, poco apreciada para su uso en tejidos.

The Latxa sheep is the most common breed in the Basque Country and the most primitive in production today. The name "latxa" (rough or coarse in Basque) refers to its wool, which is not very fine and therefore not very appreciated for use in fabrics.
